Fighting Against The Darkness
by poemsforsyria
This poem was inspired by both the movie The Dark Knight and Rocky films.
Ostracized by the regime,
Condemned by regime allies,
Slandered by them as “terrorists”
And insulted by those who call them “foreign agents.”
Who are they?
They are the brave people,
The strong people,
Fighting for freedom in Syria,
The brave men, women, and children.
For people of various ages have called for freedom,
And shout for liberty,
Yet the regime guns them down,
And bombs their cities,
Blowing them to pieces,
And trying to hide them in the shadows of repression.
But even with this,
Even with the attacks,
They will NOT FALL,
They will NOT DIE OFF.
For they aren’t flies,
They aren’t the germs that the regime says they are,
But they are fighters,
Freedom fighters in Syria.
For while the situation is very violent,
And although the cost has been high,
The people continue to keep going,
And standing.
No matter what happens,
No matter how many failed attempts by the world to bring peace occur,
They will never stop,
Even as the regime lands blow after blow.
The world may abandon them,
But fear not,
Even as some wonder whether to aid them,
They will never surrender to oppression.
So don’t forget,
That even in the regime’s shadows,
They will stand,
And fight the darkness of the night,
Until the sunrise appears,
The sunrise of freedom.
This sunrise may seem far off,
But the Syrians will see it,
For this sunshine will shine over them and their children,
Sunshine that basks over them as they come out of the shadows of repression.
BACKGROUND: In the movie The Dark Knight, Gotham City DA Harvey Dent says “The night is darkest just before the dawn and I promise you, the dawn is coming.” That reminds me of how Syria is going through dark times, but will, in my view, be FREE. Also the resilience of Syrians is why they will win. They won’t give up, just like how Rocky never gave up in his fights.
